Josiah Starbuck is a fourteen year old who dreams of joining the crew of a whaling ship someday, just like his father and his grandfather had.   But when a ragged sailor arrives on his doorstep, Josiah’s world turns upside down.

The Sailor is named Ishmael, and he has terrible news: Josiah’s father, the first mate of the Pequod, is dead, along with the rest of the crew. Ishmael claims they were led to their doom by the mad Captain Ahab and Ahab’s hunt for the legendary white whale Moby-Dick.

But Josiah feels there is something more to his Fathers death, and he can’t understand how Ishmael survived when all the other crew died.

Grief-stricken, Josiah sets sail with his dog, Zeke, in order to find the truth of his father’s death. Can he and Zeke discover the secrets of the Pequod at the mysterious Arch of Bone?

Book Review: Say it Out Loud

Say It Out Loud

by Allison Varnes

Random House Children's,  Random House Books for Young Readers

 Middle Grade

 Pub Date 24 Aug 2021

I’m reviewing a copy of Say It Out Loud through Random House Children’s and Netgalley:

Charolette Andrew’s doesn’t mind being quiet, in fact she prefers it.  When she isn’t speaking people can’t make of her stutter. But when she witnesses bullying on the school bus and doesn't say anything, her silence comes between her and her best friend.

To make matters worse her parents signed her up for musical theater. Charlotte doesn't want to speak onstage, but at least she doesn't stutter when she sings. Then, just as she starts to find her voice, the arts program is cut. Charlotte can't stay silent anymore.

To in order to ease her guilt and to help her classmates Charlotte begins to write anonymous encouraging notes to her classmates. Letters to the school board to save the school musical. And an essay about the end of her best friendship--and her hope that she can still save it.

Words could save Charlotte Andrews and everything she believes in if she just believes in herself enough to speak up.

I give Say It Out Loud five out of five stars!

Book Review: Bent Pages

Biographies & Memoirs /Christian

I am reviewing a copy of Bent Pages through BooksGoSocial and Netgalley:

Can your ten earliest memories help you define who you are?  Recalling the most important decisions you have made in your life that these will have a bearing on future decisions to change the course of your life for the better. I decided to examine those very memories and decisions for myself in Bent Pages.

From the time she was a child the author had a habit that drove her family crazy, that was to bend the corner of a page down on a book I was reading if it contained information I wanted to remember and look back on.  It was easy to tell the books she had read, and the ones that had inspired he, because there would be bent pages.   This book is a snapshot of the bent corners of pages in my life that have inspired and taught me. They are moments I never want to forget, even if painful. They have made me who I am. And I would not change that for the world!

In this book we are reminded that we can make a difference, one person at a time, beginning with me. I have learned that God is indeed in control, even when life seems chaotic.

I have also learned that I get to choose how I want to view those events that affected my life. I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to be a victor.

Welcome to the adventure!

I give Bent Pages five out of five stars!

For the bank robbers they are trying to catch, it is never just about the money, It's about taking risks and adrenaline rushes, and getting caught is not part of the game. But after a visit to the nursing facility where her mother lives, Ava is attacked walking back to her car. Fortunately, FBI Special Agent Caden Denning arrives in time to help fight off her attacker.

It is Caden who reveals to Ava that she may hold the key to the murders of three families, and he needs her help before anyone else is harmed. The hits show a pattern, and clearly the killer has an agenda. But if Caden and Ava can't discover what it is, Ava may be next on the hit list.
