Pub Date 21 Jul 2020

I am reviewing a copy of An Introduction to John Owen through Crossway and Netgalley:

John Owen (1616–1683) was the most formidable of the English Protestant Theologians.  Owen was born sometime in 1616 to a family living in the tiny village of Stadhampton, in Oxfordshire.

An Introduction to John Owen, highlights the Christian life he wanted his readers to have.

John Owen was one of England’s Earliest authors of Children’s books.  He believed that Children needed to be educated in the Faith.

In this book Crawford Gibben approaches John Owen’s core intellectual ideas.

This book is well written, and researched, a great introduction to one of the greatest theologians of all time.

I give An Introduction to John Owen five out of five stars!

Book Review: Letter to My Rage

Letter to My Rage

An Evolution

by Lidia Yuknavitch

Pub Date 25 Aug 2020

I am reviewing a copy of Letter to My Rage through Scribd and Netgalley:

*Not recommend for younger readers...

Letter to My Rage opens in a clinic where the author is waiting to be tested for Covid 19 antibodies, seeing the president on the television screen leaves her furious, seething with anger.  She’s furious that we are so unprepared for the Pandemic, furious about her own past it seems, her relationship with her Father.  She goes on to talk about how the rage does not destroy her but has changed her and compelled her.

The murder of George Floyd leaves her seething.  Lidia  joins the protests and asks that if men’s anger is frequently used to reinforce an unequal system—as in the grotesque spectacle of a white man’s knee on a Black man’s neck—how can women’s be used? How can her own? Can it be as constructive as it is destructive? Can it create something that was not there before and not just for her?   In that waiting room she realizes the answer in the body that has contained the rage for years, in her very blood, she can offer protection to others, fuel for others and activism, her blood can bring a chance for a cure.

I give Letter to My Rage three out of five stars...

Lieutenant Joseph Brady is assigned a supervisory position at the Washington Arsenal when an injury prevents him from being able to lead troops to battle.  Clara has caught his eye, but he is fighting for increased measures to prevent explosions in the factory as well.

After multiple shipments of Washington Arsenal Cartridges fail to fire, everyone who works there becomes suspect of sabotage.  Will the love between Clara and Joseph survive both pressure and suspicion.

Book Review: Becoming Elisabeth Elliot

Becoming Elisabeth Elliot

by Ellen Vaughn

B&H Publishing Group (B&H Books, Holman Bibles, B&H Español, and B&H Kids)

B&H Books

 Biographies & Memoirs  |  Christian  |  Religion & Spirituality

Pub Date 15 Sep 2020

I am reviewing a copy of Becoming Elisabeth Elliot through B&H Publishing Group and Netgalley:

After her husband Jim Elliot and four of her Colleagues were killed in Ecuador by an Amazonian Tribe, Elisabeth took her daughter and snake bite kit and went prayerfully to stay with the same tribe of stone aged people who had killed her husband. Many came to Christ compelled by Elisabeth’s capacity for forgiveness and friendship.

Elisabeth Elliot was a no nonsense courageous Christian who went on to write dozens of books host a long-running radio show, and speak at conferences all over the world.   Elisabeth Elliot was a pillar of committed, coherent faith, a committed and at times controversial icon.

In Becoming Elisabeth Elliot paint the adventures and misadventures God used to shape one of the most influential women in modern church history.  The book paints a picture of a funny, sensual, brilliant, witty self-deprecating, sensitive, radical, and surprisingly relatable person utterly submitted to doing God’s will, no matter how high the cost.

Elisabeth did not question how it made her feel, but instead asked whether it was true or not.

I give Becoming Elisabeth Elliot five out of five stars!

I am reviewing a copy of Growing Together through Crossway and Netgalley:

In this books we are reminds us that mentoring involves more than simply developing a friendship with an older or younger woman. It is designed to bring unity in the faith, knowledge of Christ, and maturity that overflows into a secure and stable trust in God that withstands the enemy’s attacks.   Mentoring is helping to lead others to a deeper and more meaningful relationship with Christ.  We are encouraged to share our stories with those we have been mentoring.

This book goes on to encourage us  to pray for the needs of those we are mentoring, and we are reminded that we pray because God hears us, we pray  daily, and we are reminded not to pray using empty phrases that only sound good.

Growing Together is divided into 11 lessons that offer springboards to discussions on mature Christians mentoring newer discussions.

I give Growing Together five out of five stars!
