This wonderful children's book teaches children about the Pullman Porter. Children learn in this book that the first Pullman sleeping car was built in 1857 and that after the slaved were freed following the Civil war George Pullman hired the best and brightest former slaves.
Porters became the most respected men of their communities. Children will learn that Porters served many functions from maid to nurse and much more. The book speaks of both the benefits as well as the hardships The Pullman Porter dealt with.
The text of this book is wonderful but the beautiful illustrations will draw children as well.
Five out of five stars.
